📝 Ingredients & Quantities

Base Ingredients

  • Fresh Turmeric Root – 1 inch piece, grated

    • Substitute: ½ teaspoon organic turmeric powder (if fresh is unavailable)

  • Fresh Ginger Root – 1 inch piece, grated

    • Substitute: ½ teaspoon dry ginger (śuṇṭhi), but fresh is always preferred for its prabhāva

  • Whole Black Peppercorns – 4–5 lightly crushed

    • Substitute: 1 pinch freshly cracked black pepper powder

  • Raw Honey – 1 teaspoon (added only when the mixture cools below 40°C / warm, not hot)

    • Substitute: None – honey has a unique yogavāhī quality

  • Water – 2 cups

Optional (for deeper nourishment)

  • Cinnamon stick – 1 small piece

  • Cardamom – 1 pod

  • A pinch of nutmeg – especially beneficial for Vata disorders

  • 1 teaspoon ghee – enhances bioavailability and grounds Vata

🔥 Method of Preparation

  1. Bring the water to a gentle boil in a small pot.
Ayurveda emphasizes alpaśaḥ (gentle heat) for extracting the subtle essences of herbal roots.

  2. Add the grated turmeric, grated ginger, and crushed peppercorns.
Stir gently and reduce to a simmer.

  3. Simmer for 10–12 minutes until the water becomes golden and aromatic.
This allows the active compounds—curcumin, gingerols, shogaols—to fully release.

  4. Turn off the heat and let the mixture rest for 2–3 minutes.

  5. Strain into a cup.

  6. Allow to cool slightly until it is warm (not hot).
Add honey at this stage only.
Honey should never be heated in Ayurveda.

  7. Optional: Stir in 1 tsp ghee for enhanced absorption and a grounding effect.

  8. Sip slowly, mindfully, preferably on an empty stomach in the morning or early evening.
